THE PLAYWRIGHT of SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE EDWIN DROOD MYSTERY : Paul-Felix Montez

Playwright Paul-Felix Montez originally wrote and copyrighted the original play Sherlock Holmes & the Edwin Drood mystery in 1982. What happened to delay this authentic & true to the Conan Doyle character play to this day? "Edwin Drood the musical opened on broadway, and so many regional theaters considering production of the dramatic, thriller play "Canceled" productions of this play, so as not to lose out on the chance to have a highly publicized Broadway musical production in their theaters. So it has slept over these long years, till a chance meeting of Sherlock Holmes fans and myself decided that it's story, writing, and theatricality had to be brought to life and join the world cannon of Sherlock Holmes literature, new theater works, and to a new generation of theater, Sherlock Holmes, and Charles Dickens lovers. A Sherlock Holmes Online Authentic World come to Life! A World of Intellect tested!

A man runs with breakneck speed down a warehouse street at night pursued by a horse and carriage which he barely avoids. He enters a building where a human sacrifice is about to take place. With the help of his partner, armed with only a cane and a revolver, they dispatch a gang of villains with the speed and timing of a Jason Bourne. The heroes of the scene are Holmes and Watson. So opens Guy Ritchie's Warner Brothers film, SHERLOCK HOLMES. And slated in Sherlock Holmes 2? Holmes and Watson as buffed martial artists? Living in Victorian England? Really? This feature film, due to its entire presentation, poses the question, what happened to the authentic Sherlock Holmes?

One wonders if Jeremy Brett's impeccable performance as the master detective would find a contemporary film and television audience. It lacks after all the fighting frenzy and blatant sex appeal found in Robert Downey's portrayal, traits which seem necessary nowadays to lure film goers into theaters. Is the Doyle Holmes no longer relevant?

What makes Holmes Holmes? Certainly not his prowess in hand to hand combat (though he was a skilled boxer), nor his sex appeal. If anything he is asexual. What makes Holmes so amazing - in addition to his idiosyncrasies - is his most powerful weapon, his immense intellect. How he is able to focus that fine tuned logical mind on a problem (be it blackmail, murder or theft) and tear into it like a terrier makes for endless reading and viewing pleasure.

After virtually giving up hope of seeing any new production which presents our hero in the manner befitting him most (as Doyle wrote him) I have stumbled upon the most the most unique and authentic Holmes site, a site where the detective is given his due. The site is The Sherlock Project.blogspot.com which is touting a new play, SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE EDWIN DROOD MYSTERY PLAY.

This blog site is a Sherlockian delight for it challenges you to decipher a series of clues found in a series of visually riveting short videos, allowing the viewer to actually think and be like Holmes - observe what's in front of you and then deduce what is seen. Pure deductive reasoning and method on this blog site challenges your intellect and powers of observation to the max. This is the quintessential Sherlock Holmes web site ever! Live inside the masters head and live it! The game is truly afoot here!

A truly devoted Holmesian

In Search Of the Authentic Sherlock Holmes & Watson a timeless perspective!

After seeing Guy Ritchie's SHERLOCK HOLMES (2009) and waiting for the yet to be released SHERLOCK HOLMES 2, I'm wondering whatever happened to the authentic Sherlock Holmes. There must be millions to be made in presenting the great detective as a comic book character or Warner Brothers wouldn't be investing a fortune in a sequel. Yet how sad that the studio doesn't find the original source material good enough fodder for a production, let alone presenting Holmes and Watson as they were originally envisioned.

Great performances were gleemed from relying on Doyle's writing. Basil Rathbone's portrayal relied heavily on Holme's logical, deductive reasoning while down playing the character's less than noble traits (his irritalbility, cocaine addiction and erruptive outbursts), all the while being saddled with a bumbling sidekick. He still embodied the essence of Doyle's character. It doesn't hurt any that Rathbone looks like he stepped out of a Strand Magazine illustration.

In 1958, Peter Cushing infused the character with those traits lacking in the Rathbone interpretation (sans the drug use), playing up his arrogance and sometimes explosive nature, yet never undermining the character's vast intelligence and razor sharp deductive powers. We were also given an intelligent and thoughtful Watson in Andre Morrell's performance. A shame that Hammer Films HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES didn't find a more receptive audience which would possibly have led to a series of films featuring Holmes and Watson.

When Granada produced their series in the 1980's they hit the ball out of the park. They understood the value and recognised the gold which could be mined out of the original stories. The productions successfully captured the feeling of a time now lost. The writing was spot on, the dialogue was rich with the flavor of the time. The casting of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwick was brilliant. They together, combined with Granada's superlative production values, finally gave the world a Holmes saga worthy of Doyle.

The upcoming Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law film has me lamenting on why the authentic Holmes and Watson can't seem to cut it in Hollywood. Fortunately the internet is ripe with sites keeping Doyle's true character alive and vital for yet another generation to rediscover. The Sherlock Holmes International site contains a wealth of information, as are some of the wonderful British groups. Sherlockian Who's Who is a terrific source for finding various Holmes clubs worldwide. The Sherlock Project on blogspot offers an interesting game of unscrambling clues in videos which leads to a greater clue. Great fun.

So as devout Holmsians brace for the release of SHERLOCK HOLMES 2, I think I'll bury myself in these amazing internet sites and think back to the days when well trained Shakesperean actors were entrusted with breathing life into the the great detective, with a tip of the hat to Jeremy Brett.
